Pushing and pulling film are creative techniques that adjust how your film is processed to achieve specific effects. Pushing film involves developing it for longer than usual, boosting contrast, enhancing grain, and bringing some brightness to underexposed shots (But you can't retrieve information that isn't there). You can push film shot at box speed (its native ISO) or under its box speed, which can add character to your images, like extra contrast and a moodier feel. Pulling film, on the other hand, shortens development time, reducing contrast and grain for softer, more muted tones—ideal for overexposed shots or when you’re after a gentler aesthetic.
At Poji Film Lab, we’re experienced in pushing and pulling film, ensuring precision and care to bring out the best in your images. We recommend Portra 160 and Portra 400 for pushing and pulling, as they’re specifically formulated to handle these adjustments well, offering flexibility and consistent results. While films like Portra 800 can be pushed or pulled, they aren’t as forgiving or versatile, making them less ideal.
